Could Texans trade for dominant NFC edge-rusher this offseason?

The Texans enter 2024 with the third-most salary cap space ($69.95M) in the league, per Pro Football Focus. With plenty of money to work with, could they trade for a dominant edge-rusher from the NFC this offseason? PFF's Brad Spielberger thinks so.

Spielberger suggests that Houston could trade its 2024 second-round pick (No. 59) to the Philadelphia Eagles for edge-rusher Haason Reddick.

"Teams looking for a smaller outside linebacker who can get upfield in a hurry and generate quick pressure with good bend around the edge will be calling Philadelphia," Spielberger writes. "If the Houston Texans cannot find a way to retain Jonathan Greenard in free agency, here they pivot to a pass-rush specialist to play opposite Will Anderson Jr."

Reddick, who is looking for a new deal, was granted permission to seek a trade by the Eagles last weekend, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. However, it isn't that simple as the 29-year-old doesn't necessarily want to leave Philadelphia.

"He wants to be a member of the Philadelphia Eagles," Rapoport said. "However, a couple of years ago he signed a three-year, $45 million free agent contract. That was a great, great deal at the time. He has just, in his mind, outplayed it."

Reddick has certainly done that after posting four straight double-digit sack seasons with three different teams (Eagles, Panthers and Cardinals). However, it is now up to the Eagles to decide whether they want to give him his new deal or let him go.

If the team decides to do the former, the Texans should do their best to acquire him and pair him with the 2023 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, LB Will Anderson Jr., who had seven sacks in 2023.

Houston has plenty of money to spend with QB C.J. Stroud on his rookie deal. And adding a player of Reddick's caliber to its defense could make the Texans true Super Bowl contenders in 2024.
