Cowboys coaching-staff shakeup continues with Kellen Moore departure
Cowboys OC Kellen Moore is the latest departure amid the Dallas coaching-staff shakeup.
David Moore of the Dallas Morning News reported the Cowboys OC and the team mutually agreed to part ways on Sunday. Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy will call plays in 2023, which he did when he was Green Bay HC.
Letting go of Moore is a surprise because the Cowboys offense had points where it played at an elite level during his tenure.
After becoming an OC in 2019, the Cowboys ranked in the league's top 10 three times. In 2021, they flourished, becoming the No.1 unit in the NFL, and QB Dak Prescott threw a career-high 37 TDS.
However, Dallas fell short in the playoffs, and Prescott's interceptions mounted over the past four seasons.
During their last two playoff appearances, the 49ers handed them consecutive losses. Dallas scored less than 20 points in each defeat.
Prescott threw 10 or more interceptions in three of the past four seasons, including a career-high 15 in 12 games this season.
Prescott, the franchise QB, is on a four-year deal with $126 million guaranteed, per Spotrac. So the Cowboys expected him to play at a higher caliber, likely contributing to the change.
Plus, Dallas grows more impatient amid its 27-year Super Bowl drought.
The Cowboys changed their coaching staff hoping it would help them reach a championship level again. Along with Moore, Dallas let go of eight assistant coaches this offseason.
