Cowboys finally make big offseason splash with trade for top CB

The Dallas Cowboys are on the board this offseason with a major addition, reportedly acquiring five-time Pro Bowl cornerback Stephon Gilmore from the Indianapolis Colts.

The price to acquire Gilmore is only a fifth-round pick, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. 

Gilmore will be 33 at the start of the season, and even though he is not quite the player he was during his prime years with the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots, he remains a high-level corner who should dramatically improve the Cowboys secondary. Dallas' defense was already eighth in the NFL in passing yards against during the 2022 season.

Gilmore, who had signed a two-year deal with the Colts before the season, appeared in 16 games and intercepted two passes along with 11 passes defended. In his career, he has intercepted 29 passes and defended 127 more. 

For the Cowboys, it is the exact type of move a team in Super Bowl-or-bust mode should be making. 

Gilmore is an established player — and a darn good one — who should make an already-strong team even better. Even if it does not work, you have to respect the effort and the price is minimal. 

He joins a Dallas defense that already boasts stars like Micah Parsons and Trevon Diggs. 

As for Indianapolis, it is a pretty damaging blow to a defense and team that was already one of the league's worst and a pretty big sign this is going to be a rebuilding year.
