Cowboys give positive update on potential extensions for two Pro Bowlers

One of the key hot-button topics surrounding the Dallas Cowboys doesn't actually involve this offseason or even this coming season. Instead, it's the looming question of what the team plans to do over the next two to three years with contract extensions due for multiple high-profile names.

Two of the most noteworthy of the group are wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and cornerback Trevon Diggs. Lamb, whose fifth-year option was picked up in order to keep him from being a free agent next offseason, could become one of the top-five highest-paid wide receivers in the NFL if his trajectory as an NFL star continues in 2023.

As for Diggs, the former second-round pick is slated to be a free agent next offseason, which adds a bit more pressure for the Cowboys.

While addressing the two rising stars, Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones gave fans a reason to be cautiously optimistic about what's ahead in terms of re-signing both, David Moore of the Dallas Morning News revealed. He expressed confidence that the team can get both deals done, pushing back on the notion that it'd be "daunting."

“It’s not daunting,’’ Jones said of signing both players. “I think it’s doable. It’s just part of managing the football team, part of managing the salary cap. “But I certainly think it’s doable.’’

It's a great sign to hear at least some form of optimism from Jones on the idea of bringing both players back with new contracts, but regardless of what he says, it's going to be a tall task for the Cowboys to make it work. Factor in that linebacker Micah Parsons is eligible for an extension next offseason, and the situation gets even tougher to gauge.

Both Lamb and Diggs are projected to earn new contracts that would place them in the top 10 of the highest-paid players at their positions by Spotrac. Lamb's deal should be as close to cut-and-dry in terms of any risk of the Cowboys not making it happen. Losing a player of his caliber at such a vital position is a nonstarter for Jerry Jones and company.

The Cowboys have previously opted not to pay top dollar in the secondary, at least in recent years, but there should be cautious optimism on both sides that they can make it work, especially considering there's very little debate that Diggs is among the best corners in the NFL.
