Cowboys hire Brian Schottenheimer to assist on both sides of the ball

On Thursday, NFL insider Albert Breer reported the Dallas Cowboys are hiring former Jacksonville Jaguars coach Brian Schottenheimer as an assistant.

In a move that may raise some eyebrows about head coach Mike McCarthy's job security, Breer described Schottenheimer's role as "unique."

According to Breer's source, Schottenheimer will have a hand in offense and defense, expected to work with offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and defensive coordinator Dan Quinn.

Schottenheimer has followed in his father's footsteps, the late Marty Schottenheimer, holding several coaching positions in college and the NFL since the late '90s.

Schottenheimer began his coaching career as an assistant with the St. Louis Rams in 1997, before stops with the Kansas City Chiefs, Syracuse University, USC, Washington's NFL team, San Diego Chargers, New York Jets, University of Georgia, Indianapolis Colts and Seattle Seahawks.

Last season, Schottenheimer held the position of passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach with the Jaguars.

After the Jaguars hired Doug Pederson as head coach, Schottenheimer was not brought back to the coaching staff for the 2022-23 season.
