Cowboys make history in 40-point shutout win over Giants

The Dallas Cowboys blew out the rival New York Giants in a laugher Sunday night, 40-0, dominating so hard they made NFL history.

Dallas' impressive victory helped them become only the fifth team in NFL history to begin the season with a shutout on the road, winning by 40 or more points.

Things were clicking for the Cowboys all night long and they quickly silenced the Giants crowd at MetLife Stadium. The Cowboys took a 16-0 lead after one quarter thanks to a blocked field goal returned for a touchdown and a pick-six of Giants quarterback Daniel Jones. Leading 26-0 at the half, the Cowboys continued to pour it on en route to a huge division win.

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott didn't have to do much on Sunday night while Dallas leaned on the run game instead. Tony Pollard led the way, finishing with 70 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries. Meanwhile, the Cowboys defense told the story of the game. Not only did they come away with two turnovers, but they harassed Jones the entire night. Dallas recorded nine hits against Jones, sacking him seven times for 47 yards. Furthermore, they held the Giants' signal-caller to only 104 yards off 28 attempts.

Dallas got the win, but the bigger story coming out of Sunday night's game might be the relationship between Jones and his head coach, Brian Daboll. Daboll refused to pull Jones from the contest with the game in hand for the Cowboys. Instead, Daboll continued to send Jones out there to take hits in a downpour, risking potential injury during a game already decided. Some, like NBC "Sunday Night Football" commentator Cris Collinworth, believe Jones will gain respect from his teammates by hanging in there. But, even if Jones asked to stay in, it's a poor decision at best and irresponsible at worst if you're Daboll.

For the Cowboys, it's all gravy. They're 1-0 and feeling good heading into their Week 2 contest at home against Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets. Meanwhile, the Giants seemingly have much to figure out ahead of their next game against the Arizona Cardinals.
