Cowboys rookie corner Trevon Diggs may miss rest of season with foot injury

Rookie cornerback Trevon Diggs has been one of the lone bright spots for the Dallas defense this season, but he may be out the rest of the season after fracturing a bone in his foot during the Cowboys' loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said Diggs is expected to be "out 4-6 weeks. Based on the timing, it’s possible his 2020 season is over."

It's possible that Diggs is able to have a speedy recovery and be ready to go in four weeks, but if the timeline is more like six weeks, the Cowboys may decide to let Diggs take his time getting healthy and have him ready to go for next season. But it certainly is a tough loss for a defense that has already been struggling this season.

While the Cowboys defense is among the worst in the NFL when it comes to yards allowed this season (and dead last in points allowed), their secondary has actually been closer to average as opposed to downright terrible. Diggs, who was selected in the second round of this year's draft, has been a solid contributor, with his best game coming against the Eagles when he picked off two of Carson Wentz's passes.

The Cowboys could try to rush Diggs back, but even though they are technically still in the playoff picture due to the general awfulness of the NFC East, it's hard to imagine they see themselves as real contenders at this point and are probably better off letting Diggs take the rest of the year off to focus on his recovery.
