Cowboys sign WR James Washington to one-year deal

The Cowboys have finally signed a free agent.

Dallas is inking wide receiver James Washington to a one-year deal, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. Washington is the first external free agent the Cowboys have signed this season.

Washington joins CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup in the Dallas receiving corps, a group that will look much different next season after two of its top contributors left this offseason. Amari Cooper was traded to the Browns, and Cedrick Wilson signed with the Dolphins in free agency.

Lamb will likely have no trouble ascending to the alpha role in the Dallas passing game, and if Gallup can be healthy he can contribute at a high level as well. Washington, meanwhile, will likely fill a role similar to the one he had with the Steelers, as the third or fourth option who can be a versatile option in spread concepts.

Washington played four seasons in Pittsburgh after being drafted in the second round out of Oklahoma State in 2018. His best season came in 2019, when he caught 44 passes for 735 yards and three touchdowns. In 2021, he logged 24 catches for 285 yards and two scores.
