Cowboys still working toward deal with Jason Peters

With starting left tackle Tyron Smith out of the lineup, the Dallas Cowboys have been scrambling to find a solution at that spot. It has led them to free agent Jason Peters, who was in Dallas this past week for a visit.

While no deal has officially been signed, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Sunday morning that the two sides are continuing to work toward a deal and that there is mutual interest between the two sides. All of that means something could be signed as early as Monday morning.

If Peters does not get signed it is expected that first-round pick Tyler Smith would get the start at left tackle after shifting over from left guard.

Peters, 40, has been one of the best tackles of his era, appearing in 228 regular season games with the Buffalo Bills, Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears. He is likely headed for the Hall of Fame when his career ends.

He started 15 games for the Bears a year ago. How much Peters has left in the tank remains to be seen, but he certainly represents an interesting option with the Cowboys in a tough spot at the position.

Dallas opens its season on Sunday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
