Cowboys TE Dalton Schultz: 'This is where I want to be'

Dallas Cowboys chief operating officer Stephen Jones insisted earlier this week that everyone involved wants tight end Dalton Schultz "to be a long-term" member of the organization even though the two sides failed to come to terms on an extension this summer. 

Schultz signed his franchise tender worth $10.931 million earlier this year but then had talks with the Cowboys fizzle out ahead of the July 15 negotiating deadline, and the parties now cannot re-enter discussions until after the upcoming season concludes. As Josh Alper noted for Pro Football Talk, Schultz admitted while speaking with media members on Thursday he's frustrated over the situation but is also committed to remaining with the Cowboys beyond the 2022 campaign. 

"This is where I want to be. I’ve said that from the start, and I’ll keep saying it. This is where I want to be," Schultz remarked about his future. 

Per Charean Williams of PFT, using the franchise tag on Schultz a second time would cost the Cowboys $13.1 million for 2023. The 26-year-old has only played for Dallas since the club selected him in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft, and he finished last season with 78 receptions for 808 yards and eight touchdowns.
