Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is mere months removed from suffering a compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle during a game against the New York Giants last October.
Prescott has done extremely well in his rehab and could very well be on the field for the Cowboys’ organized team activities this coming week.
“He’ll do most things. There’s a plan in place that’s coordinated with (athletic trainers Britt Brown and Jim Maurer) and the training room, so I know he feels really good,” Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said, via Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “He’s really had some excellent workouts here in the last couple weeks. I’d see him doing most of the work.”
McCarthy went on to note that Prescott will likely be cleared 100% for the start of training camp in July. This is no small thing for a Cowboys team that’s going to rely on the quarterback returning to pre-injury form.
Prescott contract extension and injury
This news comes after the Cowboys handed Prescott a four-year, $160 million extension back in March. That ended a long, drawn-out negotiating process between the Pro Bowl quarterback and his team. It was somewhat of a surprise considering the severity of the injury Prescott had suffered months before.
With Prescott taking part in the OTAs this coming week, it’s now pretty darn clear that he will have no limitations once training camp gets going.
Again, that’s a pretty big deal for a Cowboys team coming off a disastrous six-win season in McCarthy’s first campaign as their head coach.
In terms of depth, the Cowboys don’t have much behind Prescott in the quarterback room after Andy Dalton signed with the conference-rival Chicago Bears during NFL free agency. Cooper Rush, Garrett Gilbert and Ben DiNucci have started a combined two regular-season games during their careers.
Dallas just recently met with free-agent quarterback Jeff Driskel and could very well sign him. Either way, getting Prescott back at 100% is big. He’ll need to remain healthy of the Cowboys want to vie for the NFC East title in 2021.
