Dak Prescott update casts doubt on his future with the Cowboys

The Cowboys and quarterback Dak Prescott have made no progress on a contract extension. Does this mean he's entering his final season in Dallas?

Per NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, the Cowboys have made no offers to Prescott, 30, and there's no sign of a new deal. He has one year left on a four-year, $160M contract with a no-trade and no-tag clause. Unless something changes, he could explore free agency in 2025.

"We are where we are," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said of negotiations on Tuesday, via NFL.com's Kevin Patra. "We have our contract. We're locked and loaded for this year, and we can see as we move along how we are thinking."

Per Bleacher Report's Jordan Schultz, Prescott — who finished second in MVP voting in 2023 — wants a deal worth $60M annually, which would make him the league's highest-paid player. This could be an overpay for a QB who's underperformed in the playoffs.

In eight seasons, Prescott is 2-5 in the postseason, tied with Billy Kilmer and Alex Smith for the worst playoff record in league history, per CBS Sports' Jeff Kerr. Last season, he threw two costly interceptions in a 48-32 wild-card round loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Moving on from Prescott would carry risk, though, as the Cowboys don't have a viable replacement. Cooper Rush, 30, is entrenched as a backup QB. Trey Lance — the third overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft — flopped in his first two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, completing 54.9% of his passes in eight games.

The Cowboys have the 24th overall pick in the upcoming draft. Elite QB prospects, such as LSU's Jayden Daniels, USC's Caleb Williams and North Carolina's Drake Maye, should be off the board when Dallas makes its selection.

Next season, Prescott's future with the franchise might hinge on a deep playoff run. That will be difficult with a weaker supporting cast, however.

The Cowboys let several stars walk in free agency, including former Pro Bowl running back Tony Pollard (Titans) and former Pro Bowl offensive tackle Tyron Smith (Jets).
