Dallas Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy still thinks Aaron Rodgers can play at a high level

Aaron Rodgers isn't sure if he wants to play NFL football anymore. That's why he's been waffling on his retirement decision for the past two offseasons, and partially the reason why he took a four-day darkness retreat. He's trying to figure out his future.

While everything Rodgers is still up in the air for both him and the Green Bay Packers, it's worth noting that his former head coach, Mike McCarthy, still thinks the four-time MVP can play at a high level.

That's an interesting take from McCarthy because Rodgers arguably had the worst season of his career in 2022-23. In 17 games, he threw for just 3,695 yards and 26 touchdowns with 12 interceptions. His Packers were 8-9 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2018 — which was ironically the season Green Bay fired McCarthy.

Rodgers has yet to commit to playing in 2023 and it's worth noting that even if he doesn't want to retire, the Packers very well could trade him in order to move on to 2020 first-round pick Jordan Love.

For what it's worth, though, Rodgers does expect he'll make a decision quickly. He doesn't want to be like his predecessor Brett Favre, who often dragged out his retirement decisions well into the summer.

“It’s best for anybody who has an interest in this to make a decision sooner rather than later,” Rodgers told Marcus (h/t WISN). “I remember before (Brett) Favre retired, there were times in April and May, we weren’t sure if he was going to come back because he didn’t come to any of the offseason program. Then in 2008, he actually did retire in March and then said, ‘No, no, no,’ in June after OTAs, I actually want to come back and play. That’s when he was traded to the Jets. There was obviously a lot of tension that summer. For everybody involved, directly and indirectly, it’s best for a decision earlier."
