Dallas Cowboys made a risky decision Sunday morning just an hour ahead of their pivotal matchup with the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card round. The Packers had backup quarterback Cooper Rush suddenly pop up on the injury report Friday for an illness.

Per multiple reports, Rush missed the Cowboys’ final two practices on Friday and Saturday. The illness was either severe enough for him to miss critical practice time, or the illness was still in the contagious phase, and the Cowboys didn’t want that to spread to key starters.

According to Ed Werder with ESPN, the Cowboys are set to have Rush on the sidelines against the Packers as Dak Prescott’s backup. Despite the sudden illness that has caused him to miss Friday’s and Saturday’s practice, head coach Mike McCarthy trusts Rush over former San Francisco 49ers first-round pick Trey Lance.

The Cowboys will hope they don’t need to turn to Rush. However, given the number of NFL quarterback injuries this season, it very well could happen.
