The Dallas Cowboys and quarterback Dak Prescott are not expected to strike a new deal in the near future, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Tuesday.
Both the Cowboys and Prescott have a “mutual understanding of his contract situation,” Rapoport noted. Dallas has not made an offer to Prescott, even as he enters a contract year.
“We are where we are, locked and loaded for this year,” team owner Jerry Jones said.
Prescott, who signed a four-year, $160 million deal with the Cowboys in 2021, has a $55.455 million salary cap hit in 2024. Dallas restructured Prescott’s deal last week, converting his $5 million roster bonus this season into a signing bonus, effectively clearing $4 million in cap space. Before the agreement, his 2024 salary cap number was $59.4 million.
Both sides have been discussing a new contract, but clearly, an agreement still hasn’t been made. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future in Dallas, Prescott still has the vote of confidence from Jones.
“We think he’s a great quarterback. That is really the gist of what we’re about this year. We’ve got Dak,” Jones said Monday, via Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “I think Dak will be at the top of his game. I’ve said that I do think he will improve from where he is now. I think we’ll have that.”

Prescott, 30, is coming off his best season to date in the NFL, leading the league with 36 touchdown passes. Prescott finished second in the NFL AP MVP Award voting, only behind Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens. Dallas went 12-5 for the third consecutive season but failed to win a playoff game. With Prescott under center, the Cowboys are 2-5 in the postseason.
Jones does believe, however, that Prescott can lead the Cowboys to a Super Bowl, something no quarterback has done since Troy Aikman.
“When I think of Dak, he’s one of those in the top paid that haven’t won that I think can,” Jones said. “I think there are a handful or more of quarterbacks playing who haven’t won a Super Bowl that will win a Super Bowl. I think Dak is one of them. I’m firm there.”
