The Houston Texans could turn to Dallas Cowboys running back Tony Pollard to fill a glaring need, and potentially lift the offense around quarterback C.J. Stroud to new heights in 2024.
Few teams have more spending flexibility than the Texans, with the chance to take major strides toward winning a Super Bowl around a young quarterback.
As free agency looms, ESPN’s Aaron Schatz lists the Texans as the best fit for Dallas Cowboys star running back Tony Pollard.
“My original suggestion here was cornerback L’Jarius Sneed before he was franchise-tagged by Kansas City,” Schatz writs for ESPN. “So, let’s look at another position where the Texans are in need. Devin Singletary is a free agent and Dameon Pierce had a disappointing second season, so Houston could be a good landing place for one of the numerous big-name free-agent running backs.
“The best fit would be a “lightning” to go with Pierce’s “thunder.” That’s why I suggest Pollard, who is more of a light and agile receiving back than players such as Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs. Pollard struggled in 2023 but was excellent as a committee back in 2022, ranking fourth in receiving value among running backs that season.”
While teams across the NFL have seemingly never valued running backs less, Pollard could be an ideal scheme fit for the Texans.
Through the first five seasons of his career, in a Dallas Cowboys uniform, Pollard has rushed for 3,621 yards with 23 touchdowns, while averaging 4.8 yards per carry.
Playing alongside Stroud in the Texxans’ backfield, and behind a stout offensive line, for a franchise that is on the rise and becoming a legitimate threat to the Kansas City Chiefs for AFC supremacy could be an alluring combination for Pollard as he reaches free agency for the first time.

As the new NFL league year approaches, the Texans are projected to have upwards of $70 million in cap space, the fourth-most spending flexibility in the league.
General manager Nick Caserio and the Texans have a need at running back, and this might be the deepest running back class in the history of free agency to fill it.
