Veteran cornerback Cam Sutton has been the subject of a significant amount of criticism from supporters of the Detroit Lions

Playing cornerback in the NFL is among the most challenging positions, as wideouts have become bigger, faster and rules are tailored to limit was defensive backs are able to deploy to try and stop high-end receivers.

In the last month, the 28-year-old has been tasked with limiting CeeDee Lamb, Justin Jefferson, Puka Nacua and Mike Evans

Seemingly, the former Steelers cornerback has been beaten on at least one explosive play each game.

For Detroit's coaching staff, there is a recognition of the challenges playing the position, especially in 2024.

Despite giving up chunk yards and explosive play, Aaron Glenn and Dan Campbell have publicly expressed support for Sutton, as they also want his key pass breakups and competiveness highlighted.

For any member of the roster, the hope is to continue to compete on the next play, if something unforeseen occurs or if an opponent is able to get the best of the Lions on a certain play.

"That's that's the nature of playing the position. And if you're a quarterback or cornerback we talk about all the time, you gotta have a short memory, short-term memory," Campbell told 97.1 The Ticket. "And things are going to happen. And the most important thing in those positions is to bounce back.

"All we care about is when you go back and compete on the next one, you you fight. You wrestle. Just like he did last week against the Rams," Campbell continued. "In a critical third down, he comes away with that play. He makes a huge play on Puka. And that's what it's about here. And we'll mix the coverages, he'll do what he does. But Cam's going to be just fine."
