Dan Campbell gives his family hilarious advice for watching Lions games

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell can always be counted on for a good quote.

This time, Campbell’s amusing comment came during a Tuesday appearance on the 97.1 The Ticket’s “Stoney and Janson with Heather,” in which he shared the hilarious advice he gives his family before watching Lions games.

“I tell my family this, ‘Wear a diaper before some of these games,’” Campbell said. “I'll give them an alert and say, ‘Put them on and be ready to roll.’”

Campbell is, of course, referring to his aggressive nature as a play caller — something his family and Lions fans experienced firsthand in Sunday’s 41-38 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

In that game, Campbell went for it on fourth down five times (on three separate drives, scoring on two of them), and he went for it three times on one drive that started in the first quarter and carried over into the second quarter.

Detroit converted on four of its five attempts, including its final drive that led to Riley Patterson’s game-winning 41-yard field goal. On fourth-and-2 from the Chargers 26-yard line with 1:47 left in regulation, Campbell dialed up a risky pass play that ended in Jared Goff hitting rookie tight end Sam LaPorta for a six-yard gain that got the Lions into the red zone and forced the Chargers to burn their final timeout.

Three kneel-downs later, Patterson booted his 13th successful field goal of the year and the Lions were 7-2 and leading the NFC North by 1.5 games.

While Campbell’s aggressiveness on Sunday likely raised the blood pressure of not only his family but plenty of Lions fans as well, it was all part of a successful game plan.

“I had a feeling going into that game we needed to be aggressive, and I loved our matchup offensively," Campbell said. “I just knew our guys would respond. Certainly, in that moment, it felt like the right thing to do.”
