The Denver Broncos took a strategic approach to free agency this offseason, opting for modest spending despite having ample cap space projected for 2025.

Their decision to part ways with Russell Wilson earlier in the offseason, albeit with a significant financial commitment for 2024, appeared bold. While Denver faces a substantial dead cap charge of $32 million in 2025 due to Wilson’s contract, many anticipated his deal would constrain the team’s finances for years to come.

However, this assumption proved incorrect.

Contrary to expectations, the Broncos managed to create considerable cap room for free agency, primarily aimed at addressing Wilson’s dead cap charges totaling $85 million. With Wilson’s contract set to expire after 2025, Denver’s projected cap space for the upcoming offseason looks promising.

According to Over The Cap, the Broncos are forecasted to have over $88 million in cap space in 2025, placing them 10th in the league rankings. Considering the salary cap figure for 2024 was unexpectedly high at $255.4 million, it’s plausible that the 2025 cap could surpass the projected $260 million.

Moreover, potential contract extensions or restructures could further boost Denver’s cap space, potentially exceeding $100 million by the start of free agency. This financial flexibility could be augmented by having a quarterback on a rookie contract.

If the Broncos select a rookie QB in the 2024 NFL Draft and he proves himself as a viable starter in 2025, it could maximize Denver’s competitive window.

With the possibility of significant cap space and a promising quarterback situation, the Broncos are poised to emerge as a formidable contender in 2025.
