Injuries are a part of football, and any unfortunate incident can quickly take a team out of Super Bowl contention.
The Detroit Lions understand that it’s unavoidable to prevent injuries from happening in a full-contact sport like the NFL. However, they would like to see changes implemented that would make it easier for them and the rest of the league to address any roster fixes that are impacted by injuries.
The Detroit Lions want revisions to how the NFL does injury reserves
Pro Football Talk’s Josh Alper broke the news that the Lions proposed two changes that would drastically transform how teams would deal with losses due to injury after the NFL released a comprehensive list of proposals sent by teams throughout the league:
Both of those proposals came from the Lions and they concerned the mechanisms for bringing players back to the active roster.
Under current rules, players have to spend at least one day on the 53-man roster in order to be eligible to be activated from injured reserve later in the year. The Lions’ proposal calls for teams to be able to designate two players for return as long as they are placed on injured reserve as part of the team’s cut to its initial 53-man roster.
The other proposal calls for teams to be able to return an unlimited number of players to the active roster during the postseason. Current rules allow for eight players to be activated from injured reserve at any point during the regular season and playoffs.
The Detroit Lions most likely started pushing for these changes after dealing with injuries late in the season. Sam LaPorta’s injury in the final game of the season is most likely one of the biggest reasons behind the team’s push for such changes.
If these changes push through, every playoff team will be able to better tweak their lineups to maximize their chances of winning the Lombardi.
