Did former NFL executive toss shade at 49ers' Brock Purdy?

Widely respected former NFL executive and current football analyst Amy Trask sure seemed to take a shot at San Francisco 49ers starting quarterback Brock Purdy during the latest edition of the "What the Football" podcast.

"Four games, eight quarterbacks," Trask said about the upcoming divisional round of the playoffs. "Seven terrific quarterbacks and Brock Purdy."

The numbers certainly indicate such a comment is unfair to Purdy. According to ESPN stats, the 24-year-old who spent much of the fall as a legitimate Most Valuable Player candidate ended the regular season leading the league among qualified players with a 72.7 adjusted QBR, a 113.0 passer rating and an average of 9.6 yards per pass attempt. He was also third with 31 touchdowns through the air.

"Now, Brock Purdy is a good quarterback, make no mistake about it," Trask continued during the segment. "Everybody be calm, 49er fans. I'm not suggesting Brock's not a good quarterback. He is. I simply don't put him in the same category as the other quarterbacks. So I'll say it again: Eight quarterbacks, seven terrific quarterbacks, and Brock Purdy."

Purdy is no stranger to takes claiming he is more of a "game manager" than a "game-changing" signal-caller who hasn't yet proven he can routinely play at an elite level. His next chance to silence such doubters will occur when the top-seeded 49ers host the Green Bay Packers on Saturday night.

"It's not that I don't like him," Trask added about Purdy. "It's not that I dislike him. He does things very well. He is surrounded by a tremendous, tremendous supporting cast, both on offense and defense. He is a good quarterback. I don't put him in the category of the other seven."

It appears the trend of Purdy receiving bulletin board material may continue even if he guides San Francisco to an NFC Championship Game appearance for the second time across his first two pro seasons. As of late Friday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook listed the 49ers as massive 9.5-point favorites against the Packers.
