Does Richard Rodgers' return mean Eagles are close to trading Zach Ertz?

The Philadelphia Eagles have brought one tight end back, perhaps so they can trade a different one ahead of training camp and preseason games.

The Eagles confirmed Friday afternoon they've re-signed Richard Rodgers for at least the 2021 season. Rodgers, 29, has spent varying portions of the last three years with Philadelphia and is quite familiar with the club, and he recorded 24 receptions for 345 yards and two touchdowns during the 2020 campaign.

This transaction, on its own, would register little more than a blip on the radar. However, three-time Pro Bowl tight end Zach Ertz has skipped the entire offseason program and reportedly wishes to be traded or released. According to Mike Kaye of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com, the Eagles would save $8.5 million in salary-cap space by trading Ertz, and Kaye added that Friday's development may indicate "that a swap is close to coming together shortly."

Previous reports said the Eagles wanted a third- or fourth-round draft pick for Ertz. That's a relatively small price for a contender to pay at this portion of offseason activities.
