Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel offers hilarious response to Dalvin Cook rumors

Miami Dolphins second-year head coach Mike McDaniel offered one of the best quotes of spring workouts when asked about the reported availability of Minnesota Vikings running back Dalvin Cook.

"March 6, 1983, the day I was born, right? Now we take a closer look at that date and that, in fact, was not yesterday," McDaniel told reporters on Thursday, as shared by Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. "Okay, so people that are rumored to be tall, short, people that are rumored to be, you’re not going to get this guy. I’m year two. Okay?"

"What I am excited about is talking about the most important thing, which is the third day of veteran minicamp and we’ve got a lot of guys that are good players that have an opportunity to get better. Answer your question?"

Following a report by ESPN's Adam Schefter (h/t Kevin Seifert) that the Vikings have informed Cook they plan to officially release him on Friday unless a trade materializes first, Schefter relayed that the Dolphins and Denver Broncos "are two of the teams that are expected to have an interest in signing" the 27-year-old. Alper notes that McDaniel could be found guilty of tampering if the coach publicly discussed Cook's status before the ball-carrier reached the open market.

Seifert passes along that McDaniel praised the running backs already on the Miami roster during his Thursday comments.

"They are all trying to be the best, but they're not doing it in spite of each other and they recognize that each one of them can help them get better, so it's been a cool camp for them," McDaniel said.

For a piece published Thursday afternoon, Eric Edholm of the NFL's website noted that "the Dolphins make the most sense to me" as it pertains to signing Cook.

"For one, Cook is a Miami native, having won a state title at Miami Central Senior High School, and might want to return home," Edholm explained. "But more importantly, he would add real value to a backfield currently led by Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson Jr. and speedy rookie De’Von Achane."

For a least a few minutes on Thursday, McDaniel hilariously wanted nothing to do with Cook for understandable reasons.
