The Miami Dolphins have quickly been linked to a former NFL head coach as they search for a replacement for departing defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley is considered a leading candidate to replace Fangio. Rapoport added on NFL Network that the chance to pursue Staley, a former defensive play-caller for the Los Angeles Rams, is seen as one reason the Dolphins wanted to settle things with Fangio as quickly as possible.

The Chargers hired Staley off the back of his work for the Rams, where he spent a year as defensive coordinator in 2020. He had the top defense in the league by points and yards allowed in his sole season there. His record with the Chargers was much more mixed, particularly in 2023, when he reacted poorly to suggestions that he might give up play-calling duties for his struggling unit.

The Dolphins are in the market for a new defensive coordinator after parting ways with Vic Fangio, who already appears to have another job lined up.
