Dolphins place TE Adam Shaheen on injured reserve after voided trade

Less than a week after a failed attempt to trade Adam Shaheen to the Houston Texans, the Miami Dolphins placed the sixth-year tight end on the injured reserve on Tuesday.

Shaheen, 27, was sent to the Texans last week for a swap of late-round picks in the 2023 NFL Draft. The deal was voided two days later when Shaheen failed his physical due to a pre-existing knee condition. The injury came as somewhat of a surprise as the tight end hadn't missed a practice in Dolphins camp prior to the trade.

The Chicago Bears drafted Shaheen in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft, but he caught only 26 passes in three seasons with the team before he was dealt to the Dolphins in 2020 for a conditional seventh-round pick. But in his first two seasons with Miami, he caught only 24 passes for 260 yards.

In 2021, Shaheen garnered attention after landing on the COVID/Reserve list more than once and said he wouldn't be "strong-armed" into getting vaccinated.

Earlier in the offseason, the Dolphins used the franchise tag to keep tight end Mike Gesicki but failed to reach a long-term extension before the offseason deadline. The team has also increasingly relied on 2018 fourth-round pick Durham Smythe at tight end and re-signed him to a two-year deal in March.
