Doug Marrone looking for 'big jump' from Gardner Minshew in 2020

Although the 2020 NFL season is up in the air due to the coronavirus pandemic, Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone took the time to discuss what he expects out of quarterback Gardner Minshew in his second year at the helm of the offense.

"Obviously, we want to see a big jump," Marrone said of Minshew, according to John Oehser of Jaguars.com. "We're excited for him. It's a great opportunity. He's not going to change the way he is. He's a hard-working kid who has a lot of potential. We've got to make sure everyone around him is doing their job and doing it at a high level."

With Jay Gruden taking over as Jags offensive coordinator in January, Minshew will have to learn a new offense, but Marrone isn't too concerned about his QB moving forward.

"Gardner works at a very high level, so I'm not concerned about that. He's working extremely hard. He's doing everything he can safety-wise. I think we've just got to get him in here and start practicing at some point and see what he can do as far as with him and Jay and the system — and what he likes, what we've got to get him better at, improve at, then really work him on the things he did well — and really fine tune a lot of those things."

Minshew went 6-6 in 2019 with a 60.6 completion percentage, 3,271 yards, 21 touchdowns and six interceptions while also rushing for 344 yards.

With Nick Foles off to the Chicago Bears, it's no surprise that Marrone wants to see more out of Minshew in Year 2.

With not many offensive weapons and a rebuilding Jags squad, it might be difficult for the 23-year-old to truly make that big jump his coach is looking for.
