Drew Brees backing scholarship to celebrate Jason Kelce's career

Since announcing his retirement from the NFL, former Philadelphia Eagles All-Pro center Jason Kelce has received an outpouring of love and respect from countless well-wishers. Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees has decided to put those positive thoughts into action.

Brees recently announced that "Walk-On's Bistreaux," which he co-owns, will award 13 scholarships to walk-on collegiate athletes in tribute to Kelce's career.

"These scholarships represent more than just financial aid," Brees said. "They're a salute to the relentless spirit and unwavering dedication that drives athletes to excel, mirroring the qualities that Jason Kelce showcased throughout his career."

Before his iconic run with the Eagles, Kelce's journey to the NFL began as a walk-on at Cincinnati. Without that opportunity, he may never have morphed into arguably one of the best centers of all time.

At Cincinnati, Kelce transitioned from linebacker to offensive lineman and ultimately, center. During his emotional, nearly 45-minute retirement news conference on March 4, Kelce called the change a "turning point" in his career.

"Never in a million years did I think I'd play that position," Kelce said.

Thanks to hard work, persistence and the keen eye of former Cincinnati strength and conditioning coach Paul Longo, Kelce defied the odds by moving onto the pros, where he would put together a career more than worthy of a bust in Canton. And it all started with the chance to walk on with the Bearcats.

Now, dozens of deserving walk-on athletes will get the same chances to live out their dreams.

"With this initiative, your inspirational spirit will continue to guide and motivate future generations," Brees said.
