Eagles interview former NFL head coach for offensive coordinator job

The Philadelphia Eagles are making sweeping changes to their coaching staff this offseason, and it continued this week with the firing of offensive coordinator Brian Johnson after just one year. On Tuesday they already started interviewing potential replacements. According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo the Eagles interviewed former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury for the job.

Kingsbury spent the 2023 season as a senior offensive analyst for USC.

He was previously the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals for four years between 2019 and 2022, compiling a 28-37-1 record before being fired followed the 2022 season.

While he has struggled as a head coach at both the NCAA and NFL ranks (he also had a losing record as the head coach at Texas Tech), he is still regarded as a strong offensive mind, and a coordinator's role in the NFL might suit him well. NFL history is full of coaches who excelled as coordinators but were unable to take full control of a team and succeed.

Kingsbury has already interviewed for the offensive coordinator job with the Chicago Bears, and he is reportedly set to meet with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Eagles finished the season with the seventh-ranked offense in points scored and eighth in total yards. While most teams would love to have that sort of season, it represented a significant decline from the 2022 season while quarterback Jalen Hurts took a huge step backward. The Eagles also badly faded down the stretch, winning just one of their final six games, including a postseason loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

They have already moved on from both of their top assistant coaches and in search of new offensive and defensive coordinators. It seems likely that head coach Nick Sirianni will return.
