Eagles LB Myles Jack retiring just weeks after joining team

It was just a little more than two weeks ago that the Philadelphia Eagles signed veteran linebacker Myles Jack and were giving him first-team reps in training camp.

Now he is retiring from the NFL, according to a report from ESPN on Sunday

Jack spent the 2022 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers but was released after a disappointing season where he did not make the impact that was expected. The 27-year-old started his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars and was a star in the middle of their defense in the early part of his career.

After Pittsburgh released him Jack had contemplated walking away from football until the Eagles called with an opportunity. He had said he was thinking of going to a trade school and becoming a plumber or an electrician as a post-football career.

The reigning NFC champions are dealing with a relatively unproven middle linebacker room and were hoping that Jack and fellow free agent signing Zach Cunningham could provide some stability and leadership.

But while Cunningham had started to climb the depth chart, Jack was going in the opposite direction and had quickly fallen down the depth chart.

The Eagles have Nakobe Dean holding down one of their linebacker spots but have a need next to him and were hoping that one of Jack or Cunningham could fill it.

It seems that Cunningham is going to be that player. And he is going to have to be after Jack's abrupt departure.
