The Philadelphia Eagles designated running back Trey Sermon as waived/injured as one of the notable roster cutdowns before the deadline for the final 53-man roster on Tuesday.

While he showed talent and promise in the little time he played, there was not room for a fifth running back on the roster. Sermon joined the Eagles in 2022 after he was waived by the San Francisco 49ers. The Niners drafted him in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He has 186 career rushing yards and one touchdown in two seasons.

Philadelphia will carry four running backs on the roster into the regular season. D'Andre Swift, Rashaad Penny, Kenneth Gainwell and Boston Scott will make up the running back room for the Eagles this season.

There was a concerted effort in Philadelphia this offseason to improve the rushing core. During the NFL Draft, the Eagles traded a 2025 fourth-round pick to the Detroit Lions and swapped seventh-round picks to acquire Swift, a native Philadelphian who played high school football at St. Joe's Prep.

They also signed Penny to a one-year contract in March after he had spent the last five seasons playing for the Seattle Seahawks. He was drafted in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft by Seattle and has shown a dynamic rushing ability when healthy.

Miles Sanders had been the Eagles running back since they drafted him in 2019, but signed with the Carolina Panthers this offseason. Sanders was Philadelphia's top rusher last season, accumulating 1,269 yards on the ground and 11 touchdowns.

In the preseason, Sermon led the Eagles in rushing over their three games, tallying 105 yards and three touchdowns on 30 carries. His time with Philadelphia may not be over, as he still could rejoin the team through the practice squad.

The Eagles will open their season on Sunday, Sept. 10 at the New England Patriots at 4:25 p.m.
