Eagles to make QB Jalen Hurts compete for starting job?

Even before the Philadelphia Eagles agreed to trade quarterback Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts, most assumed that Jalen Hurts, who replaced Wentz in the lineup last December, would begin summer training-camp sessions as Philadelphia's starter.

According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen and Adam Schefter, that isn't the case. They report that the Eagles intend to acquire competition for Hurts, and that the "starting job is not expected to automatically go to Hurts."

Philadelphia currently holds the sixth overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, but a majority of experts are predicting the club will use that asset on a non-quarterback. The Eagles could select a signal-caller later in the draft or sign a proven veteran looking to either compete for a starting gig or earn a roster spot as a backup.

Ryan Fitzpatrick has all kinds of experience sitting behind and even replacing young quarterbacks during seasons and could be worth signing on a short-term, team-friendly contract. Cam Newton and the New England Patriots are expected to officially part ways next month after one lackluster season, and the one-time NFL Most Valuable Player could push Hurts in practices and, potentially, end the preseason atop the depth chart.
