Eagles WR DeVonta Smith considered day-to-day with knee injury

The Philadelphia Eagles played their preseason opener without rookie wide receiver DeVonta Smith, and it's unclear if the Alabama product will suit up for the team's second preseason game against the New England Patriots on Thursday.

However, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni provided a positive update on Smith during a press conference on Saturday.

"Right now, he's day-to-day," Sirianni said, according to Pro Football Talk's Josh Alper. "I don't want to put a timetable as far as if he'll be ready for Thursday. I don't know yet. So, he's working hard and working hard to get back, and our trainers and our strength staff is doing a great job of bringing him back. So, he's day to day and look forward to seeing him out there in practice soon."

Smith was initially labeled as week-to-week when he suffered an MCL sprain late last month. ESPN's Adam Schefter previously reported he was expected to miss two-to-three weeks.

The Eagles selected Smith 10th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. In his final season with the Crimson Tide in 2020, the 22-year-old caught 117 passes for 1,856 yards and 23 touchdowns. He also ran for six yards and a score.

Philadelphia opened the preseason with a 24-16 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night. Jalen Reagor and Travis Fulgham will likely continue to see more work until Smith is ready to return.
