ESPN analyst predicts Eagles to take a step back in 2023

ESPN’s Mike Clay is a Pennsylvania native and avid Eagles fan, but according to his projections, Philadelphia won’t even win the NFC East next year.

Each year, Clay puts out projections for every NFL team. He predicts 10.3 wins for the Eagles in 2023 and 10.8 wins for the Dallas Cowboys. One year after reaching the Super Bowl, he has the Eagles finishing second in the NFC East.

To be fair, Super Bowl losing teams often struggle the following year, so 10-wins isn’t outrageous, but some of Clay’s positional rankings aren’t very flattering. He believes the running back, linebacker and safety positions will finish as bottom-five units next season and expects Philly’s defense to have the league’s second-fewest tackles.

On the other hand, Clay sees big things for Philadelphia’s offense next year. The team’s quarterbacks, wide receivers, tight ends and offensive line were all given top-five grades with the offense receiving top marks overall.

Although official schedules haven’t been released, Clay thinks the Eagles’ will play the 11th-hardest schedule in 2023. He has Philadelphia favored in 14 games and underdogs to the Chiefs, Cowboys and Bills. He sees them as slight favorites on the road against the Jets and gives the team a 38% chance of beating the Chiefs in Kansas City.

It’s important to remember that projections are only estimates. Teams still have a lot of work to do before the regular season kicks off in September and so much can happen over the course of a year.

For his part, Clay has been fairly accurate over the years. According to NFLpickwatch.com, he successfully predicted 61% of games last season with a 63% win rate since 2018.
