ESPN analyst: Seahawks would be 'foolish' to move on from Geno Smith

While many national media personalities appear to be divided on the Seattle Seahawks' best course of action with breakout quarterback Geno Smith, ESPN’s Mina Kimes believes it would be unwise for the team to move on from him during the offseason.

In a recent video analysis for ESPN.com, Kimes made the case for the Seahawks to extend Smith and possibly let a young draft pick sit and learn behind him for a few years.

“I do believe Geno Smith is going to be with the Seahawks next season,” Kimes said. “Now, that does not mean there’s no chance they draft a quarterback, but I think Geno has played well enough for the team even with the turnovers lately for him at minimum to be their bridge quarterback with a young quarterback. I also think, however, it’s possible they like what they’ve seen from him enough to extend him and expend those draft picks on the defense, which has been by far the biggest issue on this team. But Geno Smith has been absolutely outstanding, surpassed expectations for the Seahawks, and I think it would be foolish for them to move on from him entirely even with some of the struggles lately.”

Over the Cap estimates Smith’s next contract could come in around $37 million per season.

Smith leads the NFL in completion percentage (70.7), and he ranks fourth in touchdown passes (27), fifth in passer rating (102.9), eighth in passing yards (3,886) and ninth in pass attempts (512).

He needs just 114 more yards to join Russell Wilson as only the second quarterback in franchise history to throw for 4,000 yards, and he needs three more touchdown passes to join Wilson and Dave Krieg as the only Seahawks QBs with 30 or more touchdown passes in a single season.
