ESPN host shuns Cowboys among top NFL dynasties
This is what happens when a team goes 28 years without a Super Bowl. When asked recently to name the NFL’s five greatest dynasties, ESPN’s Mike Greenberg had nothing to say about “America’s Team.”
As you can see, the host of the network’s "Get Up!" program gave top marks to the Green Bay Packers teams of the 1960s, followed by the 1970s Steelers, the 1980s 49ers, the current Kansas City Chiefs and Bill Belichick’s most recent Patriots teams.
So where are the Cowboys? Dallas won three Super Bowls from 1992-1995, a feat matched only by New England from 2001-2004. But Dallas wasn’t just good, it was dominant. The Cowboys went 59-16 during their championship run, winning three Super Bowls by a combined 62 points.
Seven Cowboys players from the era are now in the Hall of Fame, as are head coach Jimmy Johnson and team owner Jerry Jones. In fact, the Cowboys of the early ‘90s were so good that the team hardly missed a beat when Barry Switzer took over for Johnson in 1994, winning their last Super Bowl a year later.
To put the Cowboys on Greenburg’s list, another team would have to come off. But who? The Patriots have six championships if you count the early-2000s teams, the 49ers also won championships with two coaches (Bill Walsh and George Seifert), the Steelers won back-to-back titles twice (1974-1975, 1978-1979) and Kansas City is still writing its history.
If any team should be replaced, it’s the 1960’s Packers. Not that they weren’t a great team, five championships in seven years is no small feat, but the NFL was different back then. The league had just 13 clubs in 1960, well shy of the 32 teams competing today.
Sorry Greeny, when it comes to dynasties, the Cowboys of the ‘90s need to be mentioned among the NFL greats.
