The Falcons waived veteran Mykal Walker yesterday in a corresponding move after signing USFL standout Frank Ginda earlier in the day.

At the time of Ginda’s signing, I figured the most likely cut candidate was Mike Jones Jr., an undrafted free agent that didn’t necessarily separate himself from the rest of the group throughout training camp. However, I did mention Walker’s standing on the roster wasn’t absolute, noting the lack of ties to Ryan Nielsen as a possible factor.

It was shocking because Walker had by far the most experience among the backups at the position as well as plenty of value on special teams. There’s no doubt that he had his fair share of struggles when he was on the field, especially last year when he was named the starter, but the move was stunning nonetheless.

It didn’t take long for him to find a new home, however. Mykal Walker was claimed off waivers by the Bears, according to the team’s communications account.

Chicago is first on the waiver priority list, so it’s clear Walker was highly sought after. Ironically, Deng signed with the Bears late last season after spending much of the year with the Falcons on the practice squad.

Walker spent three seasons in Atlanta after being selected in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL draft, where, as I stated before, he mostly contributed in a reserve role until 2022, when he became a full-time starter, totaling 107 tackles (four for a loss), one sack, two interceptions, and six passes defended. He was eventually demoted in favor of rookie Troy Andersen, though.

We wished Mykal Walker the best, and it seems those wishes were granted immediately. The Bears’ linebacking core is star-studded and Walker should benefit greatly from their experience, but he might not find much playing time in Chicago.
