The San Francisco 49ers clinched the top seed in the NFC with a win over the Washington Commanders on Sunday, but there was concern that the victory came at a cost after Christian McCaffrey left with an injury. Fortunately, it sounds like the star running back is going to be fine.

Peter King of NBC Sports reported on Monday that McCaffrey has been diagnosed with a calf strain. The 49ers have nothing to play for in Week 18, however, so McCaffrey will likely sit out. That would give him three full weeks to heal, since San Francisco has secured a first-round playoff bye.

It is possible — if not likely — that McCaffrey would have sat out in Week 18 even if he did not suffer an injury. He is the focal point of the 49ers’ offense, so they need him fully healthy for the postseason.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network also reported on Monday that McCaffrey is expected to be “fine” for the postseason.

McCaffrey leads the NFL with 1,459 rushing yards this season. He also has 564 receiving yards and 21 total touchdowns. Fans in San Francisco can breathe a big sigh of relief that McCaffrey’s injury is not considered serious.
