The Dallas Cowboys reunited with an old friend earlier this week, signing running back Ezekiel Elliott to a one-year deal.
Elliott is pumped to rejoin the Cowboys and made that very clear with what he posted to his X account on Monday.
Given how brutal Dallas’ backfield situation was, many were identifying Elliott as a potential fit over the last month.
Prior to signing Elliott, the Cowboys’ running back room featured Deuce Vaughn and Rico Dowdle. They were expected to select a halfback in the NFL Draft, but they went without one.
Shortly after the draft concluded, Dallas struck a deal with Elliott.
Elliott spent the 2023 campaign with the New England Patriots, playing in every game and rushing for 642 yards and three touchdowns while averaging 3.5 yards per carry. He also caught 51 passes for 313 yards and a couple of scores.
Obviously, the 28-year-old is not the same player he was years ago, but he should still help a Cowboys backfield that was in desperate need of a boost.
Elliott, who played his collegiate football at Ohio State, was selected by Dallas with the fourth overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft.
He spent the first seven years of his career with the Cowboys, leading the league in rushing twice. His best season came during his rookie campaign, when he racked up 1,631 yards and 15 touchdowns while averaging a robust 5.1 yards per attempt.
Elliott posted four 1,000-yards seasons in Dallas overall, but toward the end of his Cowboys tenure, it was clear that he was slowing down. In his most recent year with the club in 2022, he registered 876 yards and 12 touchdowns, but logged a meager 3.8 yards per tote.
We’ll see how much Ezekiel Elliott has left in the tank for 2024.
