Falcons could have received second-round pick for WR Julio Jones before draft?

Not long after Atlanta Falcons star wide receiver Julio Jones told FOX Sports 1's Shannon Sharpe on Monday "I'm out of there, man" amid speculation the Falcons were willing to trade the 32-year-old, Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer explained Atlanta wanted to receive a first-round pick in any such transaction ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Perhaps general manager Terry Fontenot was being unreasonable at that time.

Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reported Tuesday the Falcons rejected an offer of a second-round pick for Jones before this year's draft. Florio added that selection would've been for next year because the trade wouldn't have been finalized until June 2 due to salary-cap concerns.

The Green Bay Packers are dealing with a similar issue as it pertains to the future of disgruntled quarterback Aaron Rodgers. However, Florio also noted the Falcons wouldn't have been on the hook for any of Jones' remaining salary had they accepted the pre-draft trade.

Jones has been linked with the New England Patriots, Tennessee Titans, and Arizona Cardinals in trade rumors, but it's possible clubs that spent draft picks and free-agency money on receivers won't use a second-round asset to acquire a veteran no longer in his prime at this time of the year.

Jones may find himself without a realistic exit strategy until other playmakers suffer inevitable injuries during preseason and regular-season action.
