Falcons DT says roughing penalty on Tom Brady was 'without a doubt' the worst call in NFL history

Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Grady Jarrett agrees with SiriusXM's Adam Schein that his controversial roughing the passer penalty last season against Tom Brady was the worst call in NFL history.

During the interview, Schein said he's gone on record saying that the penalty was the "single worst call in the history of the NFL," to which Jarrett replied "without a doubt" multiple times.

In last season's Week 5 matchup between the Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Brady's squad held a 21-15 lead late in the fourth quarter. On third-and-five, Jarrett seemingly sacked "TB12" to set up an ensuing punt, but with the flag, Tampa Bay was awarded the first down and never gave the ball back to their opponents.

The questionable penalty was one of the many roughing the passer calls that were put under the microscope in the fall, particularly in Week 5. The league defended the referees' decisions and sent out a video to all 32 teams explaining why the penalties were called.

The Brady-Jarrett incident was also notable because the seven-time Super Bowl champion was fined $11,139 for kicking the tackle on the same play.

It was reported in late February that the league's competition committee was going to discuss making roughing the passer penalties reviewable. In late March, NFL owners rejected the proposal.

While Brady retired for the second time over the winter, Jarrett enters his ninth season, all of which have been with Atlanta. The two-time Pro Bowler led the team in quarterback hits (17), tackles for loss (12) and sacks (6.0) during the 2022 campaign.
