A former Falcons second-round pick is getting his next chance in the NFL. Marlon Davidson is joining the 49ers on a one-year deal, according to Adam Schefter.
If there’s one place in the league where Davidson could potentially revive his career, it is San Francisco, who is loaded with front seven talent.
The 49ers have enabled several players — Arden Key and Maurice Hurst — along the defensive line to turn into productive pieces after failing to make the most of the first opportunity.
When Atlanta selected Davidson 47th overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, he was a highly touted recruit out of Auburn. It wasn’t that Davidson was a bust; he’s just been dealt a lousy hand year after year.
Lower body injuries have hampered his entire career, keeping him off the field his rookie season and again in 2021. Davidson was on the injured reserve with a knee injury since the start of the 2022 campaign. Eventually, he was released.
In the 19 games he was healthy, Davidson had one sack and one improbable pick six on Tom Brady in the new regime’s first season.
Davidson just hadn’t been able to stay healthy, and the emergence of Ta’Quon Graham along the defensive front made Davidson expendable last year.
Hopefully, Marlon Davidson can have a similar career path as someone like Adrian Clayborn, who pretty much missed two of his first four seasons in the NFL. The 49ers should be able to get the most out of him if he remains available. We wish nothing but the best for the former Falcons second-round pick.
