Veterans reported to Flowery Branch on Tuesday as Falcons training camp commences. There were several notable administrative moves made, though.
In the morning, A.J. Terrell told members of the media that he had seen MyCole Pruitt in the locker room, and the signing was confirmed shortly after. Then, later in the afternoon, word came from Daniel Flick of Sports Illustrated that Atlanta waived Caleb Huntley with a failed physical designation. And last but not least, the team announced that Calais Campbell would go on the NFI list.
Pruitt returns as the co-leader in receiving touchdowns from a year ago and certainly played his way into another contract. He’s valuable as a blocker and bolsters an already formidable unit.
Huntley suffered an Achilles tear in a Week 15 loss to the Saints last season, so it’s no surprise the Falcons placed him on the physically unable to perform list. The undrafted free agent recorded 366 rushing yards and a touchdown on 76 carries while establishing himself as a viable option out of the backfield. Unfortunately, the Falcons’ backfield is crowded, and the injury will keep him sidelined. That doesn’t rule out a reunion in the future, though.
Now, most importantly, Campbell is on the non-football injury list, but he remains on the 90-man roster, which means he can return at any time. If this injury persists, the Falcons would have to place him on the reserve NFL list if it lingers to the final 53-man roster.
Generally, these things aren’t deemed too serious, but it’s worth following.
