The Falcons will work to sign the 2023 draft class over the next few months. Some take longer than others, but Atlanta has inked the first contract of the crop of rookies — DeMarcco Hellams — according to Aaron Wilson.

The Alabama product is the first Falcons’ rookie class member to ink his contract, but that’s not shocking.

Seventh-round picks aren’t exactly in a position to be negotiating their deals. In many instances, undrafted free agents are paid more than seventh-round picks; it’s strange but true.

Hellams is going to be battling for a roster spot. He should feel confident because of the lack of depth at the safety position. If he separates himself on special teams, he’ll be a lock to make the roster.

Ideally, DeMarcco Hellams develops into a subpackage role, specifically as a big nickel box safety. He’ll never turn into a full-time player, but he’s a seventh-round pick. Those are reserved for hail marys and special teams contributors.

The Falcons would be thrilled if he assumed a reserve role behind Richie Grant, Jessie Bates III, and Jaylinn Hawkins while contributing heavily in the game’s third phase.

Plenty of players have carved out a career as a special teams ace. Hellams can be a subpackage defender and mainstay in that facet for the Falcons.

Congratulations to DeMarcco Hellams on signing his contract and likely realizing his dream!
