The Arizona Cardinals signed former Arizona State and six-year NFL veteran punter Matt Haack to a one-year contract today.
Haack, a left-footed punter, joined Nolan Cooney as the only punters on the Cardinals’ roster, as both will look to compete to replace Andy Lee.
In the last six seasons, Haack has punted for the Dolphins, Bills and Colts. He has averaged 44.5 yards per punt and a net of 39.9 in the NFL. Last season with the Colts, Haack averaged 44.8 yards a punt with a 40.6 net.
The 40-year-old Lee has punted for the Cardinals the last six seasons and has been very successful. Last season, he averaged 47.1 yards a punt. Now, the Cardinals are looking to get younger at the position.
Haack’s competitor, Cooney, has not punted yet in the NFL, but was signed by the Saints in 2021 as an undrafted free agent out of Syracuse. He was released later that offseason and was signed by the Cardinals in Jan. 2022, but has yet to appear in a game.
Haack played at Arizona State from 2013 to 2016, and he punted 209 times for an average of 43 yards. He committed to play for them out of West Des Moines, Iowa. He signed a three-year deal with the Dolphins after going undrafted in the 2017 NFL Draft, and he has been starting around the league ever since his rookie year.
Haack now has a very good chance to replace Lee after signing with the Cardinals today.
