Former Cleveland Browns defensive end Carl Nassib announced his retirement on Wednesday morning, the day before the NFL season kicks off. Nassib was originally drafted by the Browns in the third-round of the 2016 draft class, which will always be noteworthy for Browns fans.
That draft was the first of the newly formed ‘analytics’ front office of Paul Depodesta and General Manager Sashi Brown. That draft class included trading from the number two overall pick twice with the Eagles and Titans to select Corey Coleman with the 15th pick overall.
Nassib played in 30 games during his two full seasons in Cleveland and totaled 5.5 sacks. He was one of the main players featured in 2018 Hard Knocks series by HBO before being a surprise cut of new GM John Dorsey. Nassib would go on to play his best football for two seasons in Tampa Bay and later with the Raiders for two years.
Nassib will forever be remembered as being the NFL’s first openly gay player after announcing it during his time with the Raiders. He thanked many who helped him achieve success in his statement and said he is stepping away from football to focus on his company. He also stated he plans to continue to work with the NFL on DEI issues.
