After 11 seasons playing in the NFL, safety Logan Ryan is retiring. Ryan played for one season with the Bucs during the 2022 season. He made the announcement with a video that he posted to social media, celebrating his long tenured career that included winning two Super Bowls.
Logan Ryan’s Bucs Career
The Bucs signed Ryan along with Keanu Neal in 2022 as they were in the middle of figuring out their situation at safety after Jordan Whitehead signed with the Jets in free agency. The plan was to move Antoine Winfield Jr. to nickel corner while having Ryan and Mike Edwards at safety with Neal playing in many packages, too.
Part of the reason he wanted to come to Tampa is because Ronde Barber was one of his favorite players and it gave him a chance to reunite with quarterback Tom Brady, who he played with for the Patriots to begin his career.
Ryan played well when available. A foot injury forced him to go on injured reserve for a portion of the season as he only played in nine games, which was the most time he missed in his career. Ryan started started in six contests, making 37 tackles and recording one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. It was working out when Ryan played, so who knows if Tampa Bay’s record could have been better if not for his injury causing him to miss eight games.
Logan Ryan’s NFL Career
Drafted in the third round by the Patriots out of Rutgers, he spent four years in New England, winning Super Bowl XLIX and Super Bowl LI. Ryan went on to sign a three-year deal with the Tennessee Titans and then played one season for the New York Giants before going to Tampa Bay.
He took his time next season wanting to contend for another Super Bowl. Ryan ended up signing with the 49ers in December after their Talonoa Hufanga tore his ACL in a game against the Bucs. He played five regular season games for the San Francisco and played during the whole playoff run. The 49ers and Ryan did reach the Super Bowl, but ultimately fell to the Chiefs 25-22 in overtime.
Ryan played 154 career regular season games with 123 starts. He recorded 755 tackles, made 98 pass breakups and recorded 13 sacks, 15 forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, 20 tackles for loss, 19 interceptions and one defensive touchdown.
In the postseason, Ryan has two championships and is also part of history as the player that intercepted Tom Brady’s last pass as a Patriot when the Titans beat the Patriots in New England during the wild card round in 2019. This was a pick-six on the play, getting Ryan his second career defensive score.
Before he even knew it, Ryan was helping out the Bucs as Brady became a free agent after the decision was made that the Patriots wouldn’t be signing him, so Brady went to the Bucs in 2020 and won the Super Bowl in his first year in Tampa.
Ryan played in 19 career postseason games, including one with the Bucs. He recorded 106 tackles, one sack, eight pass breakups, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and a touchdown.
Off the field, Ryan and his family have been passionate about recusing animals. They started RARF, the Ryan Animal Rescue Foundation, which works with animal welfare organizations to promote adoption and provide grants and educational opportunities. Ryan is quite active on his social media as well doing film break downs and discussing games. It would not be surprising ends up as an analyst sometime soon.
