TEMPE -- The Arizona Cardinals are nearly done tweaking their roster ahead of the 2023 regular season. After trimming their team to 52 players yesterday, the Cardinals claimed a league-high six players on waivers earlier this morning.

Arizona departed with a handful of familiar names, yet none were more notable than Colt McCoy.

With Kyler Murray on the PUP list (which will require him to miss the first four weeks of the season), many believed McCoy to be the frontrunner to start in Week 1 against Washington.

Yet the Cardinals saw enough of McCoy through training camp, preseason and joint practices with other teams to see he clearly didn't have enough left in the tank. The veteran passer had scheduled "off" days where he wouldn't throw in camp, he played just four drives total in the preseason and reportedly looked less than appetizing against Minnesota's defense before their preseason finale.

Now, the Cardinals are looking to start either Josh Dobbs or Clayton Tune at quarterback until Murray returns.

When it comes to McCoy and his future, all options are reportedly being weighed.

SI's Albert Breer reported McCoy is a possibility to land with the New England Patriots:

"The Patriots would like get QB Bailey Zappe back on their practice squad—question will be if he clears waivers. Meanwhile, Colt McCoy, who has a few offers, is one vet on the radar," he wrote in a tweet.

"Colt McCoy’s getting his elbow taken care of, and working through that with the Cardinals, and then will make a decision."

NFL Media's Ian Rapoport also said talking to some people close to McCoy, there are some "doubts" he'll play again.

When it comes to McCoy's future, it appears anything is up for grabs. He will turn 37 next month and had elbow surgery in the offseason.
