Former first overall pick predicts winner of Buccaneers' QB competition

2021 second-round draft pick Kyle Trask may have already lost a supposed quarterback competition to free-agency signing Baker Mayfield before the Tampa Bay Buccaneers even open summer training camp sessions. 

According to the Joe Bucs Fan website, retired quarterback, brother of New Orleans Saints' Derek Carr and current NFL Network personality David Carr suggested during an on-air segment that Mayfield began the first full week of June as the leader in the clubhouse to start over Trask when Tampa Bay opens the regular season at the Minnesota Vikings on Sept. 10. 

"...Kyle Trask is going to have to do something extraordinary" to defeat Mayfield and become the club's new QB1, Carr explained. Carr added that Mayfield probably would earn the job if things were considered "tied" between the two quarterbacks at the end of August. 

Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht, head coach Todd Bowles and offensive coordinator Dave Canales are among those within the organization who insist Mayfield and Trask will compete for the starting gig through the preseason after Tampa Bay signed the first choice of the 2018 draft in March via what is essentially a one-year "prove it" contract. Canales said last month he likes that Mayfield "has such a great swag," while Buccaneers senior advisor Bruce Arians previously noted he loves the signal-caller's "moxie." 

Carr indicated such feelings haven't disappeared from within the Buccaneers despite some ugly practice footage that emerged last week.

"They love what Baker Mayfield brings," Carr continued about the Buccaneers. "I personally love [what Baker Mayfield brings]." 

Trask spent his first two pro campaigns as a backup to Tom Brady who was buried on the depth chart and who attempted a total of just nine regular-season passes over that time. While it's still early days into what may or may not be a legitimate battle, it seems the top spot on the depth chart is more so Mayfield's to lose than Trask's to win.
