Hot off a run to an overtime Super Bowl loss as the assistant head coach of the San Francisco 49ers this past Sunday, recent former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn is moving on to a different NFC would-be contender.
Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, Lynn is signing on as the run-game coordinator of the Washington Commanders this season, under head coach Dan Quinn and general manager Adam Peters. Schefter indicates that Lynn is close to both Quinn and Peters.
Prior to his charmed run to the big game, Lynn served as the Chargers' head coach from 2017-20. It was his first (and, as of this present, last)gig as a non-interim head coach. He had previously led the Buffalo Bills under the interim tag for exactly one game in 2016.
Lynn led the Philip Rivers-era Chargers to encouraging 9-7 and 12-4 records in his first two seasons with the franchise. That 12-4 finish in 2018 begat two playoff contests. LA would go on to lose in the AFC Divisional Game to the Tom Brady/Bill Belichick-era New England Patriots. He was let go after the Chargers went a combined 12-20 in 2019 and 2020.
After Tom Telesco parted ways with Lynn in favor of Brandon Staley (and we all remember how well that worked out for the Bolts), Lynn took a step down to join the Detroit Lions as their offensive coordinator in 2021. He had been with the Niners since 2022.
