Former Detroit Lions cornerback Cameron Sutton has turned himself into authorities after he was wanted for a felony charge of domestic battery by strangulation.

Sutton had informed the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office through his attorney on Monday that he planned to turn himself into authorities, and he made good on that promise several days later, on Sunday night.

A Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office bulletin posted noted that Sutton was taken in at 8:24 p.m. ET.

“After weeks of evading law enforcement, this man has finally made the right choice to turn himself in,” said sheriff Chad Chronister in a press release. “Domestic violence has no place in our community, and no one is above the law here in Hillsborough County. My thoughts are with this woman as she continues to heal from this man’s gruesome actions.”

The Lions released Cameron Sutton a day after an arrest warrant was announced.

Police issued the warrant on March 7 after Sutton allegedly assaulted a woman in Lutz, Florida. Sutton was said to be driving a Jeep Grand Wagoner with Florida license plate AZ33QB, and at the time authorities encouraged anyone with knowledge of his whereabouts to get in touch.

Sutton, 29, is coming off his first season with the Lions.

He started all 17 games, tallying a career-high 65 tackles (50 solo), four tackles for loss, one interception and six passes defended. Sutton spent the previous six seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who selected him in the third-round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Tennessee.

He appeared in 84 games (39 starts) for Pittsburgh, compiling 168 tackles (143 solo), eight tackles for loss, eight interceptions and 38 passes defended.

Cameron Sutton signed a three-year, $33 million deal with $22.5 million guaranteed with the Lions last offseason. He was slated to start at corner this season alongside Carlton Davis, whom Detroit acquired from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers earlier this offseason.

Obviously for now his NFL future is on hold.
